Friday Five: Happy Writer Edition

Hey, everyone! I'm starting a new project, which basically means I can't think of anything other than my shiny new story. When first drafting, I get a little wacko about my writing ritual, so for my list this week, I thought I'd share the five things I absolutely need in order to write. Here goes:

1. Silence: I can listen to music while I edit, but lyrics distract me when I'm writing a first draft.

2. Green tea: Absolutely necessary. Every day. Couldn't live without it.

3. Chocolate: Dark. Bitter. Like my humor.

4. Natural sunlight: Tall order for Chicago these days.

5. Yoga pants: Comfort beats fashion. Every time.

What about you guys? What do you need to write?

  1. My yoga pants have been rename Writing Pants since I don't do yoga anymore (what and take time away from writing??? Never).

    Love dark chocolate, too. :D

    I need:

    my writing pants

Diet Dr Pepper (or Diet Coke)

The Bookshelf Muse (I live on that blog 24/7)

my writing books/notes (especially Donald Maass workbook right now and some awesome notes for last years RWA conference (links have been on my blog))

Oh and my dictionary and Roget's International Thesaurus (it's the best thesaurus around)

Once I've got all those things together, I'm good to go. :D

  2. 1. I'm with you on music. I can drowned out the TV (hubs watches while I write) with my brilliant thoughts, but lyrics distract me.

    2. Comfy chair and blanket.

    3. While I don't need snacks, certain pants or even water, I do need a headful of words. Once they come I'm in the zone. If they're visiting someone else I end up Facebooking.

  3. Ooh, I love this list. I like hot tea and chocolate too. And no matter how inviting I make my office, the couch just calls to me. But sometimes, if I really need to buckle down, I head up to the nursery and sit in the rocker. It's empty and quiet and peaceful and I can usually write a chapter in no time!

  4. Sadly, I relate writing to drinking energy drinks, because it's usually midnight and I need to stay up just *one more hour* to get some work done! I need to quit! I'd love to have a green tea habit. :D

  5. I love green tea! Have you tried the Green Ginger from Tazo? It's really the only one I drink these days.

However, if I'm going to write, I must avoid procrastination-induced narcolepsy, so it's coffee for me. Comfy pants and a cozy sweater. And I need the soundtrack specific to my project -- and if I can make it specific to the scene, so much the better.

But the two most important things: Nobody hovering over me asking for homework help or a snack or thoughts about our weekend plans, and a DEADLINE. Nothing sharpens one's focus like a date on the calendar in bright red Sharpie.
