John Irving interview on Twitter. I know you guys probably don't have time for the whole thing, but it is full of interesting commentary on writing--the process, the lifestyle, the discipline. I've linked to a segment about the writer's need for "alone time." Irving explains it well. Have a listen if you can.
Wow. I am certainly not a writer, but I totally identified with his description of the need to be alone from an early age.
ReplyDeleteMe,too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link ... I'm off to check it out!
ReplyDeleteYes - and double yes. Writers really do need alone-time. And we're the worst sometimes at finding it! LOL!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I sort of scoffed at this at first. I'm social! I don't need alone time. But then I really thought about it and I cherish the hours that the house is quiet and everyone is in bed and it's just me and my book or computer or even the latest trashy television show. I guess I really do cherish my time alone.
ReplyDeleteI just watched the whole interview. So thoughtful. I've only read a few of his books, but now I must read them all.
ReplyDeleteWhich books have you read, Lori?
ReplyDeleteI've read A Prayer for Owen Meaney,Cider House Rules and A Widow for One Year. It took me a long time to read Meaney. I couldn't really get into it and put it down for about a year and then forced myself to get past the tough part and then loved it. Widow was the first one I read after sitting next to a woman on a flight (BC) who was reading it. It's my favorite of the three. I picked up Garp at a rummage sale a few years ago but have been hesitant to read it because I disliked the movie. But after watching that interview I'm going to do it. I'm flying to Milwaukee for a conference next week and it will be my plane reading.
ReplyDeleteOh, Lori, I think you'll love Garp.
ReplyDeleteUntil I Find You, Hotel New Hampshire and The Water Method Man are also very good.
Have fun in Milwaukee!
